Just because it “seems” like things will never change, that is not actually the case. The nature of life is change, no matter what. How you feel today — no matter how boring, stifling, angering, or depressing it may be — will be different tomorrow. Your feelings will look different in a day, a week, a month, and a year, so look to the future with optimism. It means continually checking in with yourself, continually reaching out to new people who may have ideas you haven’t tried before, and continually asking questions that will help you improve your life. Yes, asking for help was already listed, but it is so important that it is worth repeating. Getting through recovery’s ups and downs requires you to do more than just occasionally show up and interact with people who may be able to support you. Even if you are making one small choice to improve how you feel each day, like working out more or eating better, track it. You can then consistently look back, see how far you’ve come, and assess what you have accomplished along the way.

Where you go for that support is entirely up to you – there are many paths forward. But you have to go forward, and that’s not an easy direction. You expect the world to nurture you, and when it doesn’t, you fall to pieces. The people I’d hung out with and felt close to often faded away.

It is an alternative to the typical recovery model or 12-step program system. Alcohol and drugs are terrible for your immune system. When you don’t put anything unhealthy into your body, you won’t be so vulnerable to colds and stomach bugs.

I’m sick of having nothing to do, I’m sick of been in my own mind, I’m sick of watching everyone enjoy themselves without a care in the world. I cant relate to anyone inside the rooms of NA I was never that «Hardcore» I’m sick of not having sexual encounters with females. I’m sick of this «Good Boy» attitude I’m sick of the disconnection with people.

But I’m also going to say something else that might not be what other people in recovery want to put out there, but what I have found in my experience to be completely true. There are exceptions to this, like if someone alludes to their own struggle with alcohol, and then I might offer up a bit more of my personal experience. You are a mirror now, a flashlight of sobriety in a society that is laced with the judgment that it’s abnormal to abstain from alcohol. People will assume you drink and will be very curious about why you don’t have a drink in your hand when they do. That’s just the nature of existence – there are ups and downs on the rollercoaster. The point is to make the most of the ride.
This year, I celebrated five years sober. It’s been over six years since I first started seriously questioning my relationship with alcohol and considered a life without it. That’s six hard, beautiful, glorious years during which I not only stopped drinking, but also finally moved on from all recreational drugs as well as a history of bulimia. I remember when I was considering sobriety, and I carefully crafted my opinion of Alcoholics Anonymous. Who does that, when instead, we all have the opportunity to do the same things, over and over again, and just expect different results? That’s the key to successful alcohol moderation.
